The Battle for Your Life: The Armor of God – Part 9

Are you saved?

Do you have Faith in your Salvation?

Helmet of Salvation

17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION

In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul did not make the first reference to the Helmet of Salvation. As can be noted by the all CAPS in the NAS above, the words are also found in the Old Testament (TaNaK).

17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.               Isaiah 59:17 NAS

Paul also wrote of the Helmet of Salvation in his letter to the church at Thessaloniki.

8 But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.                        1 Thessalonians 5:8 NAS

The Roman Helmet

The Roman helmet, the galea, had several forms throughout the Republic and the Empire.

The Montefortino, one of the earlier forms, was bowl-shaped, with an integral, raised central knob. Sometimes it also had cheek- and neck-guards.

The Coolus helmet was used at the same time as the Montefortino and was similar. However, the Coolus had raised panel cheek-guards and the knob on top was cast separately and soldered or riveted on.

The Imperial Gallic helmet is generally thought to be the “typical” Roman soldier helmet. Nevertheless, this type is found in at least three styles, as recognized by archeologists.

The Roman Helmet protected the head, the brain, the cheeks, and the neck from slashing and stabbing.

Similarly, the Helmet of Salvation protects the mind (and brain) of the believer.

Those wearing the Helmet of Salvation are protected from negative thoughts, strength-sapping ruminations, deceptions, and more.

What give this helmet its power?

The power is in salvation that can only come through faith in the Son of God.

Save. Savior. Salvation.

Save

In Greek, to save is

sṓzō4982 (from sōs, “safe, rescued”) – properly, deliver out of danger and into safety; used principally of God rescuing believers from the penalty and power of sin – and into His provisions (safety).

As the angel foretold to Joseph in a dream:

21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”                                                  Matthew 1:21 NAS

“He saves”

The Hebrew name, Yeshua, became in Greek, Iēsoús, and later into Jesus.

Yeshua is a shortened form of Yehoshua, “The LORD is salvation.”

Yehoshua is from the tetragrammaton YHVH [YeHoVaH] and yasha3467 save

yesha3468 salvation; from yasha3467 save, to deliver [the root of Savior]

As sinful people in a sin-filled world, we are spiritually dead. Yeshua saves us from this death and gives us new life – we are re-born.

Yeshua speaks with Nicodemus about this new birth (as reported by John).

3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless * one is born again he cannot * see the kingdom of God.”

Of course, Nicodemus, as do people today, questioned this concept.

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot * enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”

Yeshua further explained.

5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless * one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot * enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’

Again, Nicodemus pressed Yeshua for more clarification.

9 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?”

Yeshua begins to define being saved and given eternal life.

14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him                                        John 3:1-21 NAS

Yeshua: In Hebrew, His very Name describes His mission.

10 “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”                                       Luke 19:10 NAS

Savior

In Greek, sṓzō4982) is the root of: sōtḗr4990 (“Savior”)

sōtḗr4990 (a masculine noun, derived from sṓzō4982, “save”) – properly, the Savior, Jesus Christ who saves believers from their sins and delivers them into His safety.

In the Christian Old Testament (the Hebrew TaNaK), YeHoVaH was the Savior of Israel.

11 “I, even I, am the LORD, And there is no savior besides Me.                                          Isaiah 43:11 NAS

The New Testament announces that God, the Savior, has come to the earth; He has come to His people.

1 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.                                      Luke 2:11 NAS

The Apostle John testified to Savior.

14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.                                               1 John 4:14 NAS

Salvation

Sṓzō4982 is also the root of the Greek word for Salvation:

sōtēría4991 (from sṓzō4982, “to save, rescue”) – salvation, i.e. God’s rescue which delivers believers out of destruction and into His safety.

9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,                                        Hebrews 5:9 NAS

The Helmet of Salvation.

The Helmet of Salvation protects the mind.

  • from satan-induced wrong-thinking and deception
  • from negative and false thinking
  • from self-criticism and self-condemnation

You are what you think you are.

In other words, if you focus mainly on the negative aspects of a life event, you’re more likely to replay those negative thoughts and images in your head for longer periods of time.

This kind of repeated negative-thinking clouds your vision and affects the way you interact with the world — and yourself.

Understand this:

  • God knows you inside and out.
  • He knows your every thought, word, and deed.
  • You can’t hide anything from God.
  • He is omniscient.

8 “And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith.                                    Acts 15:8,9 NAS

Yet, remember, the devil is limited. he cannot read your mind.

However, satan does try to influence your thinking. he can suggest an idea; but he can’t make you believe it, or even think it!

So, we need to wear the Helmet of Salvation to protect us from wrong thinking.

5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,                                              2 Corinthians 10:5 NAS

Yes, YeHoVaH knows His creation.

He knows His people.

He knows me.

He knows you.

But He has given us the Spirit.

He has given us the Sword of the Spirit.

He has given us the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

He has promised.

He has given us His Word.

More on that

… another time.

Blessings,

TLThomas

Be a Berean!

10The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.                   Acts 17:10, 11 ESV
